Werner Cloete ahead of Capital Craft Beer Festival 2017

Perdeby spoke to comedian Werner Cloete ahead of his performance at Capital Craft Beer Festival 2017. The festival will take place on 10 June, featuring craft breweries showcasing their beers, and live performances.

What does it mean for you to be a part of the Capital Craft Beer Festival?

Being part of the Capital Craft Beer festival and the team behind Park Acoustics is great. I honestly think it's one of the best-run events in the country and always a lot of fun! Adding some comedy to the day is a bonus!

How do you adapt your comedic style to different crowds?

You do to an extent, as in going louder or faster depending on the event but I do not alter my content, my style of comedy is what it is, people will either love me or hate me and I'm ok with that.

You perform at many festivals such as Mieliepop. Do the different audiences receive you differently?

Every gig is different and you never know how the crowd will react, that's just comedy. but generally, festival crowds are a lot more accommodating which is nice.

How do you balance your life as a comedian and a copywriter for BNRY?

I'm lucky in that I love both very much. I love what I do, and comedy is a passion, it’s nice in a way because I'm able to do comedy the way I want to, because I want to, not because I need to. I think that makes a big difference. like I believe Mel Miller once said, the day comedy becomes a job, I quit.

What advice do you have for students who also want to go into comedy professionally but are currently studying courses that have nothing to do with the entertainment industry?

Go into it for the right reasons. Don't go into it because it's a career choice and you want to be rich and famous, that's not how this works, rather go into it because you need to make people laugh then I guarantee you, you will win as a human.
